5 Day - Achill, Connemara and The Burren Self Guided Motorcycle Tour of Ireland

5 Days (4 Nights) 140 miles per day average
A Map of the route for Irish Motorcycle Adventures self guided tour of Achill, Connemara and The Burren.
This motorbike tour, which we refer to as 'West Coast Lite', is great for those who don't have the time to do the full West Coast Self Guided MotorcycleTour. It will take you from the pretty Mourne Mountains to the historic county town of Enniskillen and into the wilds of County Mayo, with its dramatic landscape. You will visit Ireland's largest island, Achill. Next stop is Connemara in Galway, deep in the real Ireland of the West, where the Irish language is still spoken. You will continue into County Clare and The Burren, a limestone landscape which is unique in Ireland. Your route home is through Ireland's heartland.

About our routes: We have spent many happy hours riding around Ireland to find the very best motorbike roads. They have been refined over three years to produce the daily routes you will find stored on the GPS fitted to each bike.

Day One - Counties Down, Armagh & Fermanagh

County Down is the home county of Irish Motorcycle Adventures so it's the one we love best! The Mourne Mountains, made famous by the song 'Where the Mountains of Mourne Sweep Down To The Sea', are on the route. You will travel along the shores of Strangford Lough, a tidal sea lough with 365 islands and an abundance of wildlife.

County Down is a lush, green county with rich agricultural land. With small fields bounded by hedges, it's a beautiful place to meander along the back roads taking in the scenery. The Fermanagh lakelands are a must see. Your route will take you close to the shores of Lough Erne with its 154 Islands and pre-Christian settlements, a good side trip if you have time. Fermanagh is another lush, green county with some great roads and lots to see.

Day Two - Counties Sligo & Mayo

County Mayo is our first stop in the West of Ireland, with its majestic mountains and rugged coastline. Mayo was one of the counties hardest hit by the Irish Famine and it suffered mass depopulation. On the coast you will visit Achill Island, the biggest island in Ireland, which has a great circuit called the Atlantic Drive. See the big Atlantic rollers break on the coast and remember the next parish west is New

York!

Day Three - County Galway - Connemara

As you pass the rugged Twelve Bens mountain range in the north, go through lake-rich Roundstone Bog and admire the golden beaches reaching out into the Atlantic Ocean, you'll know you're in Connemara by the light that constantly changes the mood and tone of the landscape. Connemara has long been regarded as the 'real' emerald of Ireland. Highlights like 'The Famine Village', a restored village deserted at the time of the Irish famine, the world famous Kylemore Abbey and Connemara National Park all add to the haunting landscape. In the north is Croagh Patrick, a pyramid shaped mountain where Saint Patrick is said to have banished snakes from Ireland. It must have worked because to this day we have no wild snakes!

Day Four - County Clare

To the north of the county, the rugged Atlantic coast rises nearly 700 feet above the sea at the Cliffs of Moher. A couple of miles away, you'll find an amazing karst limestone region called the Burren, which features caves, underground streams and rare alpine flora. The area also has plenty of fascinating archaeological sites, including the 5000-year-old Poulnabrone Dolmen.

Day Five - The Heartland of Ireland

As you start to travel home, you will be cutting diagonally across the very centre of Ireland. This is an area rarely travelled by the tourist buses of the west coast. It will give you a glimpse into the life of everyday Ireland. From the bogs to the plains, no visit would be complete without seeing the 'Heart of Ireland' .
